Individual therapy
Skills group (billed separately)
Standard DBT runs about a year — two passes through the six-month skills curriculum. Set the group to zero sessions to see what DBT-informed individual therapy alone would cost, or set individual to zero to price a standalone skills group.
Nothing here is saved or sent. Confirm any figure with the practice and your insurer before you rely on it.
The three configurations worth pricing
Full adherent programme. Individual weekly plus group weekly, for twelve months. The most expensive option and the one the evidence was built on. Phone coaching is usually folded into the individual fee, though it’s worth confirming rather than assuming.
Standalone skills group. Set individual to zero. Six to twelve months of the curriculum while keeping the therapist you already have. Consistently the best value in DBT and the option almost nobody is offered unprompted — many programmes run groups that accept outside members.
DBT-informed individual therapy. Set the group to zero. Simply the cost of weekly therapy. Weaker for self-harm and chronic suicidality, and entirely reasonable for a lot of people —the difference is worth understanding before you choose on price.
Before you trust the reimbursement number
Call your insurer and ask four things, in this order. Does my plan have out-of-network mental health benefits? What’s the out-of-network deductible, and how much of it have I met? What percentage of the allowed amount do you reimburse — and what is the allowed amount for these codes, which is often well below what the clinician charges? And is group psychotherapy covered as a separate service?
That last question catches people out, because a plan can cover individual therapy and reimburse nothing for the group, which is half the programme.
The routes that change the number entirely
University training clinics and postgraduate institutes run adherent DBT with supervised trainees at a fraction of these fees. County mental health systems frequently fund DBT outright, because it reduces hospital admissions and saves them money. And intensive outpatient programmes that use DBT are billed as a level of care rather than as sessions, which insurers treat very differently.
What DBT costs goes through each of those in more detail.
